NHS Lanarkshire created a great resource to help education staff teach Relationship, Sexual Health and Parenthood (RSHP) sessions to children and young people across Lanarkshire with an additional support needs. This resource was popular, however some schools found that they still needed more support to use this tool with pupils with more complex needs. The outcomes from this ongoing project include:
• Creating resources in a variety of mediums to help teachers teach
their pupils about important subjects such as puberty, consent and
positive relationships.
• Training staff, improving their confidence and building capacity
in order for this work to continue for years to come.
• Helping build a culture change within the setting, where all
education staff acknowledge the sexuality of their pupils, and
understand the importance of teaching RSHP.
• Support teachers in the classroom with delivery of the sessions,
with continued feedback and joint working.
However the most important outcome for us was empowering young
people with knowledge about their own sexual health.
We are working with approximately forty staff with plans to
also have input within another school in Lanarkshire.
